Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is a concept that characterizes educational endeavors merging theoretical academic instruction in a particular field with its practical implementation in a real work setting. The objective is to equip students with the capacity to connect their educational knowledge to their professional endeavors. The fundamental concept behind these programs is to foster a closer collaboration between the academic and industrial sectors. Industry-focused education represents a holistic approach to learning, offering hands-on comprehension while concurrently honing and fostering professional skills.

The major objective is still to improve learning, employment, and personal development for both students and businesses (e.g., access to new talent, new ideas, and the opportunity to grow and diversify their workforce).


A contract between an apprentice and an employer willing to sponsor the trainee and provide paid practical experience is known as an apprenticeship. In a proper work environment, a qualified journey person supervises the trainee concurrently. The learning process must include both classroom instruction and work experience.

Work Integrated Learning Program​

Academic and paid job terms alternate throughout co-operative education (co-op alternating and co-internship models). A co-op internship consists of a number of consecutive co-op work terms. In both models, work terms give students experience in a professional setting related to their course subject.

Entrepreneurship is the capability to utilize resources, space, mentoring, and funding to engage in the initial stages of launching new businesses and support external concepts that tackle real-world problems in exchange for academic credit.

Field Placement: Students will participate in comprehensive, part-time, practical training in a setting linked to their academic field.

Co-operative Education (co-op alternating and co-internship models):  Co-op comprises academic and paid job terms that alternate. A co-op internship consists of numerous co-op work terms scheduled one after the other. Work terms give experience in a workplace setting relevant to the student’s topic of study in both models.

Entrepreneurship: Allows a student to use resources, space, mentorship, and funding to participate in the early stages of commercial start-ups and push external ideas that meet real-world needs in exchange for academic credit.

Field Placement:  Students will receive part-time/short-term extensive hands-on practical experience in an environment related to their academic area.

Internships: Typically, one discipline-specific, supervised, structured, paid or unpaid work experience or practice placement for academic credit is available. Internships can occur during a degree programme or after all academic coursework has been completed before graduation.

Mandatory Professional Practicum/Clinical Placement: It’s a kind of work experience in any subject that requires practice-based work experience for professional licencing or certification under the supervision of an experienced registered or licenced professional.

How Does Work Integrated Learning Work?

A recognised component of degree programmes, work-integrated learning is evaluated and awarded with credit points. Students must use and integrate prior knowledge and learning through learning activities in order to make and defend decisions in a work-related situation. Reflecting on their own choices and actions throughout work-related activities helps students learn how to critically evaluate themselves.

Employers are seeking for recent graduates who can join their organisation or firm and quickly contribute. WIL is renowned for helping recent graduates adjust to working life. To prepare the future workforce, TAPMI is attempting to establish and sustain cooperative relationships with business, industry, governmental, and community organizations.

Students have the chance to work under supervision on basic tasks for an extended period of time at an organisation. By learning to integrate previously studied theory with its practical application in the industry, students can develop professional competencies. Depending on the subject, work placements are also referred to as internships, practicums, and clinical placements.
